Wheelchairs on Tongatapu

On November 21, 2014 we needed to go and assess and deliver two wheelchairs.  Following are some pictures from the day.

When we pulled up to this house, the mother was outside doing her wash by hand, even though there was a washer there.  Evidently it must have been broken.  This is the back porch of the house.

As we were leaving the place Ana ask if we could have some of their bread fruit out of the tree.  If you look close you can see a little boy up in the tree picking the bread fruit for us to take with us.

These are some more of the children from this home, playing with an old bath tub in the yard.   They probably use it to bath in by packing water to it.

This is our recipient of the wheel chair at this same house.  She is in the living room, and through the curtains is the kitchen with only a table made out of old boards, very unlevel and that is all there is in the kitchen, no stove, no fridge.

This recipient was in the hospital.  She has just had surgery on her foot.  She has diabetes and had a sore on the soul of her foot, so they cut the bottom of her foot off.  She was still very uncomfortable, so we did not put her in her chair.  We just measured to make sure it would fit her.  When these people come to the hospital, they must bring their own bedding, their own food, and clothing.  The only thing provided for them is the bed.  Across from her was another lady who had her leg amputated just below the knee.  We felt a little guilty giving this woman a wheelchair and not the other one, but they do have to request it from us or the hospital calls us.  Maybe she already had one of her own.
